I’ll be turning forty this year and wanted to do something challenging to mark my fifth decade of life.
I’ve also written before about being inspired by the cleansing ritual called Misogi, in which a pursuit is undertaken that radically expands one’s sense of what’s possible.
With those goals in mind, I entered the lottery for the Leadville 100 trail race last year and was lucky enough to get picked. However, I’ve found this is a different kind of growth challenge that we also need in our lives.
My interpretation of Misogi is that it is a test to jump into the ring against something completely novel that makes us uncomfortable. However, you also need what Jim Collins calls your “Big Hairy Audacious Goal.”
This is a thing that is planned and prepared for with many bite-sized pursuits that prepare you for that one big thing along the way.
While you should certainly aim for accomplishment on your quest, I find its biggest value comes from the insights and experiences you gain along the journey.
Just as I hope you take on some challenges that stretch your comfort zone, I also hope you find your BHAG to set your sights on.
