Red Flag Screen 2: Atrophy and/or Asymmetry

Look for major deviations in position or alignment between the right and left sides. Don’t be too critical here, minor asymmetries are to be expected, especially in athletes that compete in sports with a dominant side, like baseball players. When evaluating for asymmetry also look for muscle atrophy which describes the shrinking of a muscle. The atrophied muscle appears as sunken in rather than rounded like the opposite side. Any obvious deviations or muscle atrophy is a red flag.
